From Ravenna, Ohio Portage County on the Continental Divide comes Ohio Tidbits, a site containing my favorite bits of Activities, Events, Food & Restaurants, Groups, History, Shops, and Travel in Portage County, Northeast Ohio, the Connecticut Western Reserve, Ohio and even other states.
This site has ongoing construction with changes or refinements (and unexplained spelling errors) being made every day or two.
What information should I include?? To list every attraction would just be a duplication of information found in other sources. I am thinking of listing the places, events, and organizations I or friends are familar with, probably with a descriptons and comments of the listing that you would not get in another source. After I have the material, I will probably do the listing as both catorgory & place; or event & catagory (&) organization. Time and resource shortages prevent complete listings, thus, TIDBITS
What is the Connecticut Western Reserve? (as I recall-if doing reports check exact facts) The 13 Colonies each claimed the land to the West as far as the ocean. They were asked to give up Connecticut, however, was given the lands to the West by the King of England. As a comprise when NY and Pennsylvania were formed, Connecticut was able to keep or reserve the lands in North Central and Northeast Ohio for itself. The Firelands, in the Western part -the 2 farthest counties I believe- were named because Connecticut gave property in them to the people burned out of their homes in the war (1812?).
CONTINENTAL DIVIDE --- Rain fall to the North goes to Lake Erie, Rain to the South go to the Mississippi. The dividing line goes through downtown Ravenna at Main & Chestnut Streets and through Suffield Township.
One of the purposes was to publish excerpts from a book I found at a tag sale a few years ago. It is from 1837, The OHIO GAZETTEER, and TRAVELERS GUIDE;Containing descriptions of the towns, townships, and counties, with their locations and distance from the capital of the state.
The restaurant section was to list the lower priced or unique dinning places I had found
I was also interested in informational pages on activities as Hot Air Ballooning.
In general the site is a salmagundi of hopefully interesting and useful information -- you look it up, I had to. www.dictionary.com
May we remember the reason behind the holiday season and pass on God's gift to us for the benefit of our friends, community and country.
